Writing a backstory that helps the table
A backstory is a promise to your DM about what kind of stories you want. The most useful ones answer four questions in a paragraph each:
- Where are you from? One place, one or two people who still live there.
- What changed? The moment you stopped living an ordinary life.
- What do you want? Something the campaign can offer or threaten.
- What's unfinished? A rival, a debt, a secret. This is what the DM will reach for.
The trait, ideal, bond and flaw lines come from the 5e character sheet. Play the flaw: a character who is proud, greedy or reckless makes better scenes than one who is merely brave.
Questions
How does the backstory generator work?
Choose a species, class, background and tone, add any notes, and an AI writer drafts a 250-word backstory with a personality trait, ideal, bond, flaw and two plot hooks for your DM. The random story beats below work without AI too.
Is the backstory original?
Yes. It is written fresh each time from your inputs and invents its own names and places. Edit it freely: it is a first draft, not canon.
How long should a D&D backstory be?
Most DMs prefer a few paragraphs: enough to know where you came from, what you want and who you care about. A page of lore is harder to weave into the campaign than two strong hooks.
What makes a good backstory for the DM?
Loose ends. A missing sibling, an unpaid debt, a rival who is still out there. Things the DM can bring into the story are worth more than a tragic but finished past.
Is my text stored?
No. Your inputs are sent once to generate the text and are not saved on our side.
