D&D NPC Generator
The players just walked up to someone you haven't invented yet. Tap once for a name, a face, a want and a secret.
Your NPC
Tap Generate.
Running an NPC in three moves
- Show one thing. Describe the look in a single sentence. Players remember "the woman with the ferret in her collar" far longer than a paragraph of description.
- Want something. The want is the engine. An NPC who needs a letter delivered will steer the conversation there, and that's how side quests start.
- Hide something. The secret is for you. Let it leak through behaviour, and only reveal it if the players dig.
Write the NPC's name on an index card the moment you say it aloud. Players will ask about them three sessions later.
Questions
What does the NPC generator give me?
A name, ancestry, age, job, one physical detail, a personality trait, something they want, a secret and an alignment. That is enough to play any shopkeeper, guard or stranger on the spot.
How do I make an NPC memorable fast?
Pick one detail players can see and one they can hear: a burn scar and a loud laugh, say. Then decide what the NPC wants from the party. A want makes them act instead of just answering questions.
What does the AI button do?
It turns the random NPC into a short write-up with a voice to use, a sample line of dialogue, a useful rumour and how they react if threatened. It is optional and only runs when you press it.
Can I keep NPCs I like?
Yes. Press Keep and the NPC is saved to a list on this device, so you can find them again next session. Clear the list any time.
