D&D Shop Generator

Choose a kind of shop and a settlement size. Get the sign over the door, the person behind the counter and what's on the shelves, priced from the 5e lists.

Magic items use the 2024 DMG price guidance by rarity. Very rare items only appear in cities.

Questions

What does the shop generator make?

A named shop of the type you choose (blacksmith, general store, alchemist, magic shop and more), its owner with a personality, and an inventory with prices from the 5e equipment lists. Magic shops draw from SRD magic items with rarity-based prices.

Where do the prices come from?

Mundane items use the standard 5e equipment prices. Magic items use the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide guidance by rarity: common 100 gp, uncommon 400 gp, rare 4,000 gp, very rare 40,000 gp, before haggling.

How big should a shop's stock be?

In a village, a handful of items and nothing magical. In a city, a full list and perhaps an uncommon item or two. Use the settlement size setting to match.

Can players haggle?

A common house rule: a Charisma (Persuasion) check against DC 15 knocks 10% off, and a failure by 5 or more offends the shopkeeper for the day.
