Random D&D Character Generator

A playable level-1 character in one tap, built from the free 5e SRD: stats placed for the class, HP, AC, skills, gear and a name. Lock anything you've already decided.

How the generator builds a character

  1. Picks the three origin pieces. Species, class and background come from the nine species, twelve classes and four backgrounds in the SRD 5.2, or whatever you locked.
  2. Places the scores for the class. The highest score goes in the class's main ability, the next in Constitution or the secondary ability, and so on. This is how experienced players assign the standard array.
  3. Adds background bonuses. +2 to the most useful of the background's three abilities, +1 to the next, following the 2024 rules.
  4. Works out the numbers. Level-1 HP is the maximum hit die plus Constitution modifier. AC uses the class's starting armor (unarmored defense for barbarians and monks).

Spells aren't picked for you: casters should choose their cantrips and prepared spells from their class list, because that choice shapes how the character plays more than any number here.

Questions

What does the random character generator create?

A complete level-1 character using the free SRD 5.2 options: species, class, background, ability scores (rolled or standard array) with background bonuses, hit points, armor class, saving throws, skills, starting gear and a name.

Is it built for the 2014 or 2024 rules?

It follows the 2024 rules in SRD 5.2: ability bonuses come from the background, and each background grants an Origin feat. The numbers also work at most 2014 tables if you move the bonuses to species.

Can I lock some choices and randomise the rest?

Yes. Set species, class or background to a specific option and leave the others on Random.

How are hit points calculated?

At level 1 you get the maximum of your class hit die plus your Constitution modifier (dwarves add 1 more). A wizard with 14 Constitution has 6 + 2 = 8 HP.

Why only four backgrounds?

The free SRD 5.2 includes Acolyte, Criminal, Sage and Soldier. Other backgrounds are in the Player's Handbook, which we don't reproduce.
