Why 3d6 feels different from 1d18
One die is flat: every face is equally likely. Add more dice and the totals pile up in the middle, because there are many more ways to make 10 than to make 3. Change the dice and watch the shape.
Average of 1d6: 3.5. Chance the total lands in the middle half of its range: 33% (flat, as expected).
This is why damage like 2d6 is more reliable than 1d12 even though both average 6.5–7: the extra die trims the extremes.
How to use the dice roller
Tap any die to add it to the pool. The notation box updates as you go, so tapping d8 twice and setting the modifier to 3 gives 2d8+3. Press Roll. Each die is shown on the result card: green for a maximum face, red for a 1, struck through if it was dropped.
Notation cheat sheet
| Type | Means | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
1d20+5 | one d20 plus 5 | attack roll, skill check |
2d20kh1 | roll two d20, keep the higher | advantage |
2d20kl1 | roll two d20, keep the lower | disadvantage |
4d6dl1 | roll four d6, drop the lowest | rolling ability scores |
2d6+1d4 | mix dice types | greatsword with a bless-style bonus |
d% | 1 to 100 | wild magic, random tables |
1d6! | re-roll and add on a 6 | exploding dice (other systems) |
Critical hits
In 5e a critical hit doubles the number of damage dice, not the modifier. A crit with a longsword (1d8+3) is 2d8+3, and a rogue's sneak attack dice double too.
Questions
Is this dice roller actually random?
Yes. Every die uses your browser's cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) with rejection sampling, so each face is exactly equally likely. It is fairer than most plastic dice, which are often slightly unbalanced.
How do I roll with advantage?
Tap Advantage to roll 2d20 and keep the higher die, or Disadvantage to keep the lower. In notation that is 2d20kh1 and 2d20kl1, and the dropped die is shown struck through.
What dice notation does it understand?
Standard notation: NdS for N dice with S sides, plus or minus modifiers and other dice (2d6+1d4+3), kh/kl to keep highest/lowest, dh/dl to drop highest/lowest (4d6dl1), d% for percentile dice and ! to explode on the highest face (1d6!).
Does it remember my rolls?
Your last 30 rolls and your saved formulas are stored in this browser only (localStorage). Nothing is sent to a server. Use "Clear log" or the privacy page to wipe them.
What dice do I need for D&D?
A standard set is seven dice: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 and a percentile d10 (marked 00–90). Rolled together, the two d10s give 1–100.
