Naming conventions by ancestry
| Human | Humans take names from every culture. Surnames often come from a trade, a place or a parent. |
|---|---|
| Elf | Elves pick an adult name when they come of age and carry a family name for centuries. Long vowels, soft consonants. |
| Dwarf | Dwarven clan names carry the family's honour, and are earned in deeds: hammers, forges, stone. |
| Halfling | Halflings have short, friendly first names and homely family names from hills, kettles and fields. |
| Gnome | Gnomes collect names: one from each parent, elder and friend, and use whichever is shortest in company. |
| Half-orc & Orc | Orc names are short and strong. Many add a band or deed instead of a family name. |
| Dragonborn | Dragonborn give the clan name first when introducing themselves, as a mark of pride. |
| Tiefling | Some tieflings use infernal-sounding birth names; others choose a virtue or idea to live up to. |

Questions
How does the D&D name generator work?
Each ancestry has its own set of sounds: short, hard syllables and clan names for dwarves, flowing vowels for elves, cosy compound surnames for halflings, virtue names for some tieflings. Names are assembled from those pieces, so you get thousands of combinations that still sound like they belong together.
Which ancestries are included?
Human, elf, dwarf, halfling, gnome, half-orc and orc, dragonborn and tiefling, the common player options in 5e.
Can I use these names in my campaign or book?
Yes. The names are generated, not copied from any setting, so use them however you like.
How do I save names I like?
Tap a name to star it. Starred names stay on this device until you clear them.
Tips for choosing a character name?
Say it out loud at the table: two or three syllables are easiest for other players to remember. Avoid names that sound like another party member's.
