Why taverns have such odd names

Before most people could read, an inn was known by the picture on its sign: a white hart, a red lion, a bell. Two unrelated pictures ("The Goat and Compasses") often meant two inns merged. Fantasy taverns inherit that logic, which is why "The Prancing Owlbear" sounds right and "Fantasy Tavern Inc." doesn't.

Questions

How are tavern names generated?

By combining the classic patterns of real and fantasy inn signs: "The [adjective] [creature or object]", "[Creature] and [Object]", and possessive names like "Old Martha's Hearth". The sign was historically a picture, so names favour things you can paint.

What else does it create?

A full tavern card: the keeper with a name and ancestry, the crowd tonight, a drink and a dish with prices, room rates and a rumour the party can overhear.

How much does a room at an inn cost in 5e?

The rules list lifestyle costs per day: squalid 1 sp, poor 2 sp, modest 1 gp, comfortable 2 gp, wealthy 4 gp. A mug of ale is 4 cp and a modest meal 3 sp.
