Coin conversion
1 platinum = 10 gold = 20 electrum = 100 silver = 1,000 copper. Fifty coins weigh a pound, which matters when the party tries to carry 12,000 copper out of a dungeon.
Make loot tell a story
A gem with a noble house's crest cut into it, a sword that belonged to a missing knight, a letter wrapped around the coins: one detail turns a number into a plot hook. The quest generator can supply the rest.
Questions
How does the 5e loot generator work?
Choose individual treasure (what one creature carries) or a hoard (a lair or boss stash) and a challenge tier. Coins follow the Dungeon Master's Guide treasure tables for that tier; hoards add gems, art objects and magic items scaled by rarity.
What are the CR tiers for treasure?
Challenge 0–4, 5–10, 11–16 and 17 or higher. Each tier pays out roughly ten times more coin than the one before, and hoards unlock rarer magic items.
How much treasure should I give out?
The DMG's tables assume about seven hoards across levels 1–4, and a similar number in each later tier. If your players are buying everything, give fewer coins and more items or favours.
Which magic items can it roll?
Items from the free SRD, grouped by rarity: common and uncommon at low tiers, up to very rare and legendary in CR 17+ hoards.
